On Nature (lost book)
Περὶ φύσεως (título convencional)

A book in Ionic prose, written around 500 BCE and, by tradition, deposited in the temple of Artemis at Ephesus. It was read and commented on for centuries—Theophrastus, Cleanthes, Sphaerus and several grammarians explained it—and was lost in late antiquity. Its content is reconstructed from some hundred and thirty quotations: the doctrine of the common logos, the unity and tension of opposites, the ever-living fire kindling and going out in measures, the soul and its depth, the critique of Homer, Hesiod and Pythagoras, mystery religion and the political life of Ephesus. The original order of the sentences is unknown; each editor proposes his own.

Authorship note
Heraclitus' only work, authentic and lost. The title On Nature was given in antiquity to almost every Presocratic book; Diogenes Laertius (IX 12) records others: The Muses, An accurate helm for the course of life, A guide to conduct. The division into three discourses (universe, politics, theology) probably comes from its ancient editors. Only quotations in later authors survive.
