The Law of Population
The Law of Population: Its Consequences, and Its Bearing upon Human Conduct and Morals

A neo-Malthusian treatise defending the voluntary limitation of births as a remedy for poverty and describing the known contraceptive methods. It sold more than 175,000 copies in England before Besant herself withdrew it; it was prosecuted for obscenity in Australia. It is a landmark in the history of birth control.

Authorship note
Written by Besant after the Knowlton trial to replace Knowlton's pamphlet with a text of her own; withdrawn by the author in 1891 on Theosophical grounds.
