Parmenides
Plato
A very young Socrates expounds the theory of Forms before the aged Parmenides and Zeno, and Parmenides subjects it to devastating objections (among them the one Aristotle would call the 'third man'). The second part is a dialectical exercise of enormous difficulty on the consequences of supposing that the One is or is not. The Neoplatonists read a theology in it; moderns, Plato's own self-criticism.
