Ion

Plato

Socrates talks with Ion, a successful rhapsode who recites and expounds Homer. Since Ion cannot explain his art or apply it to other poets, Socrates concludes that he speaks not by skill but by divine inspiration: the Muse magnetises the poet, and he the rhapsode and the audience, like a magnet passing its force down a chain of rings.
