The Training Anthology (Śikṣāsamuccaya)

शिक्षासमुच्चय (Śikṣāsamuccaya) · tib. བསླབ་པ་ཀུན་ལས་བཏུས་པ། (bslab pa kun las btus pa) · chino 大乘集菩薩學論

Śāntideva, pintura del siglo XIX
byŚāntideva

Twenty-seven mnemonic stanzas (kārikā) commented on in nineteen prose chapters that consist mostly of quotations from more than a hundred Mahāyāna sūtras, many lost in Sanskrit. It organises the bodhisattva's ethics around protecting, purifying and increasing one's body, possessions and merit in order to give them to beings. It is a first-rate source for lost Mahāyāna literature and the doctrinal complement to the Bodhicaryāvatāra.

Authorship note

Śāntideva's authorship is undisputed: the Bodhicaryāvatāra itself (5.105) refers to this work. It survives in Sanskrit in a single Nepalese manuscript, now in Cambridge University Library, besides the Tibetan and Chinese versions (the latter, of the Song period, attributed to “Dharmakīrti”).
