It matters as the form in which M. chose to present his master to an English-speaking public, in his own vocabulary and with some scenes in a wording earlier than the Bengali. It is the basis of the Gospel Swami Abhedananda published in New York in 1907 and of World Wisdom’s abridged edition (2011).

Authorship note

English version prepared by Mahendranath Gupta himself from his diary, earlier than the definitive Bengali text: a booklet in 1897 (A Leaf from the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna) and volumes published in Madras from 1907. It is a witness distinct from the Kathamrita, shorter and in M.’s own English.
