Correspondence with Fronto
Epistulae M. Cornelii Frontonis et M. Aurelii

Letters, many of them fragmentary, exchanged between Marcus and his teacher of Latin rhetoric, Marcus Cornelius Fronto, from the late 130s to the mid-160s. Arranged in books by addressee (Ad M. Caesarem, Ad Antoninum imperatorem, De feriis Alsiensibus, De eloquentia…), they show the heir's rhetorical training, his declared affection for his teacher, the domestic life of the imperial family, everyone's illnesses and Marcus' gradual move away from rhetoric to philosophy, which he confesses around 146 after reading the Stoic Aristo. They were thought lost until Angelo Mai found them in a palimpsest (Ambrosiana, 1815; Vatican, 1819). The standard critical edition is Michel van den Hout's (Teubner, 1988).

Authorship note
Authentic letters, preserved within Fronto's correspondence. They include letters by Marcus (as Caesar and as emperor) and his teacher's replies, plus some in Greek. They survive in a single mutilated palimpsest, so many are incomplete and their order and dates are debated.
