Busto de Marco Aurelio (Louvre, MR 561)
byMarcus Aurelius

Answers to queries from magistrates and private persons, edicts and judicial decisions that later jurists cited as law in force: on the guardianship of minors, the manumission of slaves, mothers' rights to inherit from their children (the senatus consultum Orfitianum of 178) and appeal procedures. They survive scattered through Justinian's Digest and Code.

Authorship note

Legal texts issued in the name of Marcus Aurelius (and, between 161 and 169, of the "divi fratres" with Lucius Verus), drafted by the chancery and preserved in excerpts in Justinian's Digest and Code. They are not literary works of the emperor, though the Historia Augusta stresses his personal attention to justice.
