Letters quoted in the Historia Augusta

Busto de Marco Aurelio (Louvre, MR 561)
byMarcus Aurelius

Several letters in Latin presenting a merciful Marcus during Cassius' revolt and concerned for his family. Though read for centuries as genuine, the Historia Augusta frequently invents documents to lend credibility to its narrative; they should not be used as the emperor's words.

Authorship note

Fictitious. The letters from Marcus to Faustina, Verus and the Senate quoted in the lives of Avidius Cassius and Marcus in the Historia Augusta are, according to scholarship since Hermann Dessau, inventions of the anonymous late fourth-century author.
