Dialogue with the Lady of the North

अष्टावक्रदिक्संवाद (Aṣṭāvakra-Dik-saṃvāda), Mahābhārata, Anuśāsanaparvan

Aṣṭāvakra, acuarela de principios del siglo XIX
byAshtavakra

Before granting him his daughter Suprabhā, the sage Vadānya sends Aṣṭāvakra on a journey to the North, beyond the Himalaya. There an old woman receives him and tries to seduce him; he resists with arguments about duty and fidelity, and she reveals herself as the goddess of that region, Diś, who has been testing him. Bhīṣma uses the story to answer Yudhiṣṭhira's question about the meaning of marriage.
