Leo Tolstoy

Cycle of three stories written during and just after the siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855), in which Tolstoy served as an artillery officer. They break with military epic: the hero, the author says at the end of the second, is the truth. Their success made Tolstoy known throughout Russia.
