Drama in six acts based on a real court case. Fedya Protasov, unable to make his wife Liza happy or to divorce without lying, fakes his suicide so that she can marry the man she loves; when the deception is discovered and all are charged with bigamy, he kills himself in earnest. Written in 1900, published and staged in 1911.
