Where Love Is, God Is

Leo Tolstoy

Story adapted from a tale by the French Protestant Ruben Saillens. The shoemaker Martin Avdeich, who has lost his family, hears in a dream that Christ will visit him; during the day he takes in an old street-sweeper, a mother with her baby and an apple-seller and a boy thief, and understands that Christ visited him in them. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
