The Gambler

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Dictated in twenty-six days to the stenographer Anna Snitkina to meet the contract with the publisher Stellovsky. Alexei Ivanovich, tutor in the family of a ruined Russian general at the German spa of 'Roulettenburg', is ruled by his love for Polina and by roulette. Drawn from his own passion for gambling and his affair with Apollinaria Suslova, it is also a satire of Russians in Europe.
