Chaitanya Charitamrita (Krishnadasa Kaviraja)

শ্রীচৈতন্যচরিতামৃত

Chaitanya danza entre sus seguidores
byChaitanya Mahaprabhu

In three parts —Adi, Madhya and Antya— it narrates childhood and the Navadvipa years summarily and dwells on the Puri period, the journeys and the final "divine madness". It integrates the theology of the Gosvamis: Chaitanya as Radha and Krishna in one body, the doctrine of divine energy, the degrees of love. Tony K. Stewart has shown how it fixed a canonical version that absorbed and displaced earlier biographies. It is the work any reader looks for when approaching Chaitanya.

Authorship note

It is not Chaitanya's work but the theological biography Krishnadasa Kaviraja wrote in Vrindavan some eighty years after his death, in Bengali with thousands of Sanskrit quotations. It records dialogues and teachings it places in the master's mouth; its value as evidence of his words is indirect. The completion date is debated (1581 or, more probably, around 1612-1615).
