Verdict

Elle ne figure pas dans l'œuvre de Rabia al-Adawiyya

A modern poem, spread above all through Charles Upton's free versions (1988), that puts a hagiographical anecdote into the first person. The story of the woman with fire and water appears without a name in Joinville's *Life of Saint Louis* (1309), and later Islamic versions attribute it to Rabia; no Arabic poem by Rabia with this text exists.

The love of desire is that I am occupied with remembering You to the exclusion of all else; the love of which You are worthy is that You lift the veils for me until I see You. Neither in this nor in that is the praise mine: Yours is the praise in this and in that.»
