Born of a seminar at the Free Academy of Spiritual Culture (1920–1921), it reads Dostoevsky as a metaphysician: a discoverer of man, of the freedom that can choose evil, of suffering as a path and of Russia's destiny. Berdyaev acknowledges him as his spiritual master.
