Meher Baba en 1941
byMeher Baba

The practical exposition of his teaching: the *sanskaras* or mental impressions that bind consciousness, maya, the ego, reincarnation and karma, violence and non-violence, meditation, love, discipleship and God-realisation. It alternates doctrinal explanation with stories from Indian and Sufi tradition, such as that of Majnun and Layla, and prefers explaining why some actions bind and others free over laying down moral rules. It is the work most read by his followers and the one that best shows the editorial problem of a silent teacher: between dictation and printed text stand several hands and several revisions.

Mani Irani wrote in 1955 that Deshmukh had 'embellished and worked up' the dictated points. Sixth edition in three volumes (Sufism Reoriented, 1967), re-edited with Meher Baba's approval by Ivy O. Duce and Don E. Stevens; seventh edition in one volume (Sheriar Press, 1987), by Eruch Jessawala, Bal Natu and J.
