תולדות יעקב יוסף

Portada de la primera edición de Shivhei ha-Besht (Kopys, 1814–1815)
byBaal Shem Tov

Homilies on the weekly Torah portions printed in Korets in 1780: the first Hasidic book ever published. Jacob Joseph, former rabbi of Shargorod expelled by his community for his attachment to the Besht, develops a severe critique of the rabbinic elite of his time and a theory of the relation between "men of form" (the learned) and "men of matter" (the people). The master's quotations are, for historians, the most reliable corpus of his thought, though mediated by the disciple's elaboration. It was one of the books the *mitnagdim* condemned most harshly.

Authorship note

Work of Jacob Joseph ha-Kohen of Polonne (c. 1710–1784), not of the Besht. It is listed here because it is the oldest and richest source of his teachings: hundreds of passages introduced with "I heard from my master".
