The twelve years of exile: pilgrimages, encounters with sages and a multitude of interpolated tales, among them those of Nala and Damayantī, Sāvitrī and Satyavān and the Mahābhārata's version of the story of Rāma. Arjuna obtains divine weapons, and Yudhiṣṭhira answers the questions of the yakṣa by the lake.
