Symposium
Socrates
At the house of the poet Agathon, who is celebrating his tragic victory of 416 BCE, the guests deliver speeches in praise of Eros. Socrates reports what Diotima of Mantinea taught him: love as the desire to beget in beauty and the ladder rising from beautiful bodies to Beauty itself. Alcibiades bursts in drunk and gives the most vivid portrait of Socrates that survives: the silenus hiding images of gods within, the soldier of Potidaea and Delium, the man no wine can make drunk.
