Ennead I.4 [46]: On happiness (well-being)

Plotinus

Written after Porphyry left for Sicily. It discusses the Peripatetic, Stoic and Epicurean definitions of happiness and places it in the perfect life of intellect, which does not depend on external goods: the sage remains happy even in the bull of Phalaris, because his true self is not the one that suffers.
