Evil Allures, but Good Endures

Leo Tolstoy

Text for popular prints: a devil incites a slave to harm his master's favourite ram in order to provoke his anger, but the master, instead of punishing him, forgives and frees him, and the devil is defeated. The Russian title says literally "The enemy's is sticky, but God's is firm". Written in 1885. It belongs to the popular stories Tolstoy wrote after his conversion for the Posrednik press, in plain language and with the structure of a parable.
