Attributed to Diogenes of Sinope

«Diogenes lived in a barrel.»

Misattributed

Verdict

It is not in Diogenes of Sinope's work

Not a quotation but a commonplace that often accompanies his sayings. Greek sources speak of a pithos, a large clay storage jar (Diogenes Laertius VI 23 and 43), and Juvenal calls it a testa, earthenware (Satires XIV 308–310). The wooden barrel is a later image spread by modern iconography.

Source: Juvenal. Sátiras XIV 308–314 («dolia nudi non ardent Cynici… testa cum vidit in illa magnum habitatorem»), comienzos del s. II d. C. Texto latino en The Latin Library.
