What is the Absolute? Does God exist?
The question that divides and unites every tradition: whether at the root of reality there is a personal God, an impersonal principle, nothing that can be named, or whether the question itself is misconceived.
Who am I? Is there a true self?
Between the immortal soul, the Self identical with the Absolute and the absence of a permanent self, much of spiritual history is played out.
Why do we suffer?
Ignorance, desire, sin, separation, thought: each teacher has placed the root of pain somewhere different, and the remedy depends on that diagnosis.
What happens after death?
Resurrection, rebirth, dissolution into the Absolute or a deliberate silence: the answer reveals what each teacher means by life.
How is liberation or salvation attained?
Grace, effort, knowledge, devotion or method-less understanding: the path each one proposes.
Is a teacher necessary?
From the indispensable guru to the rejection of all spiritual authority: the question that most unsettles teachers themselves.
