Story of a serf with a reputation as a thief whom his mistress, to give him a chance, sends to fetch a sum of money from town. Polikushka loses the envelope on the way and, in despair, hangs himself; the misfortune then engulfs his family. Written in 1861–1862 in Brussels and Yasnaya Polyana, published in 1863.
